Photographic Shoot Out Hosted by Brazos Valley PPA

Join the Brazos Valley PPA on Monday, September 10thfor a special hands-on program featuring three amazing instructors teaching on the techniques of Posing, Off Camera Flash and Natural Light. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit all three 25 minute classes, followed by 25 minutes to use the techniques presented along with time for Q&A and one-on-one instruction. Classes will begin at 5:30pm and will repeat at 6:30 and 7:30pm with Print Competition beginning at 8:30pm

KATHY NORWOOD  Meet the Artist:

Kathy has been a professional photographer for 12 years and worked primarily as a wedding photography for 8 of those years. She is a CPP and has received her Photographic Craftsman Degree and works with her husband Robert Norwood, who is also a Photographic Craftsman and recently received his certificate as a Certified Drone Photographer. Kathy has served on the board of the Brazos Valley PPA since 2009 in all 6 of the board positions and currently serves as Vice President and Chair of Print Competition. Within the realm of photography, she has begun to learn the art of digital painting and offers this service as an add-on to her clients. She received her first three merits for images she submitted to International Print Competition in 2015, and has continued to compete throughout the next three years. With a total of 12 merits and one of those images going Loan, Kathy is one merit away from receiving her Master of Photography through PP of A. 

Kathy will share her techniques on how best to pose your subject to highlight their natural beauty while creating the perfect composition. She will show her favorite poses for both female and male, and from one to multiple family members, to bring out the best look of her subjects and how to create leading lines to produce an amazing portrait. You can find samples of Kathy’s work at 


Melanie Hall-Fisher, M. Photog. Cr., CPP and her husband Nick Fisher are the owners of Melonhead Photo which was established in 2004 in Willis, TX. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Photography from Sam Houston State University in 2007 and a year later earned her Certified Professional Photographer degree. Before moving her photographic focus to portrait art, she worked as the only full-time photographer for a daily newspaper. Nick was a firefighter before he turned to photography full time. He was valedictorian in the Creative Photography program at Humber College in Toronto. Their business is now a home-based portrait studio in Conroe, TX. Melonhead Photo is a diverse company photographing everything from families to brides, as well as commercial, schools, and sports. Melanie is the 2012, 2013 and 2015 Brazos Valley Photographer of the Year. In 2014 she earned her TPPA & PPGH associate fellowship and was a gold medalist at International Print Competition. In 2015 she earned her Photographic Craftsman degree from Professional Photographers of America. In 2016 she earned her Master Photographer degree, making her the youngest Master Photographer in Texas! 2016 was a busy year for Melanie, as she also won a bronze medal at International Print Competition, and earned her TPPA full fellowship. Then in 2017 she was named PPA Elite Plus and went Gold at IPC. She has numerous TPPA distinguished print awards as well as going 4 for 4, 3 years in a row.

They will teach on the use of Off Camera Flash to create the perfect amount of light for their subjects. They will share their techniques on how she used her flash as a fill light to compliment the natural lighting and how to use it as her main light when natural light is not the best. This class will teach exactly where to place the flash, what modifies to use to create different looks, and how to measure the flash for the right amount of light to compliment any natural light setting. MARK SYKES  Meet the Artist:

Mark is a Certified Professional Photographer who began his career in 1994. Over the years, Mark has continued to grow and pursue his passion for professional photography making himself one of the most sought-after wedding and children’s photographer in his area. After photographing over a 1000 weddings and nearly 2 decades of newborns and children’s portraits, Mark found a new passion in creating extreme senior portraits.  Mark is currently the 2018 BVPPA President and was the 2017 BVPPA Photographer of the year. A 2017 Winner of 3 merited prints and 1 Loan Print, 2016 Winner of 3 merited prints while participating in International Print Competition. 

He will share his techniques for using natural light to create elegant, soft portraits. From window light to finding and creating superb outdoor light, Mark will touch on the use of reflectors, scrims, and subtractive lighting to produce amazing portraits that will highlight your subject’s best features using whatever natural light is available.
